Market round-up 2009-10 – Signs of Life

March 9th, 2010
Components in Electronics – January 7, 2010
Neil Tyler spoke to a number of leading companies across the electronics space to get their view on what had happened in 2009 and what the coming 12 months could bring.
If we’ve learned anything over the past 12-18 months it’s that forecasting what will happen in th economy over the next 12 months, in the midst of so much uncertainty and financial dislocation, is a challenge. However, according to the EEF manufacturers’ organisation the end of the credit crunch in the UK is within site and the proportion of companies experiencing problems with borrowing or finding it prohibitively expensive has begun to fall back.

Change is in the Air

March 9th, 2010

Published on gabeoneda.com – January 18, 2010

The consensus forecast for 2009 has been “low visibility” and this remains true even as the end of the year approaches. Despite recent reports of an uptick in semiconductor demand, EDA customers in Silicon Valley and in semiconductor strongholds around the world do not yet feel a strong recovery. But one thing seems crystal clear as we look forward to 2010: change is in the air. The EDA industry will need to adapt to some new realities brought about by the global recession, just as it has after previous bouts of semiconductor contraction.

With the global economy ever more dependent on semiconductor products in everything from toys to tanks, advances in automation of the electronic design process will remain critical. The need to address growing technical and business complexities will keep EDA a remarkably exciting and rewarding place to work as the applications evolve to be able to model and analyze entire systems, including software. But EDA suppliers must re-think exactly where they fit in the value chain and be prepared to embrace change in the way that value is monetized in the industry.

SPRINGSOFT ANNOUNCES SUPERHERO STORY CONTEST WINNER

March 9th, 2010

HSINCHU, Taiwan, December 08, 2009SpringSoft, Inc., a global supplier of specialized IC design software, has announced the winner of its superhero story contest. Based on a popular vote conducted on the company’s web site, Vagner Pires, a design engineer at a large semiconductor company, was deemed to have the most creative story about how he overcame design and verification challenges to become an engineering superhero and make a difference in his personal life. The winning story will be featured in a new version of the SpringSoft anime comic strip featured on the SpringSoft website.

Pires’ entry creatively presented how using the SpringSoft VerdiTM Automated Debug System allowed him to spend more time with his family. He based the short story on his past experiences having to work nights and weekend to perform tedious debugging tasks, sometimes missing out on quality time with his family. Once he adopted the Verdi system, he was able to quickly find the cause of design errors and correct them, dramatically improving his overall verification cycle and keeping his projects on schedule.

His winning entry is:

  • It was a beautiful summer Friday, and Vagner had arranged with his family that they would travel to the beach that weekend.
  • First, there was a very important simulation that had to be run to complete a project. But at around 4 pm, the simulation stopped!
  • Vagner was desperate! Will I have to give up my weekend with the family over this?
  • Vagner suddenly had a brilliant idea: I can use the Verdi System to find the bug and resolve it. Bingo! The bugs were found and resolved quickly, and the project would be completed without problems.
  • On the way to the beach Vagner thinks to himself: Thanks to the SpringSoft tools, I can go to the beach with my family.

His winning text will be featured in a custom designed comic strip, using the creative anime style format SpringSoft first debuted at the 2009 Design Automation Conference. Pires will receive the original framed hand drawn artwork. Previous versions of the comic strip feature can be seen at http://www.springsoft.com/superhero_comics.

Pires was one of five finalists who were chosen from more than two dozen entrants who detailed a unique or extraordinary challenge they faced in the design or implementation of a complex IC. The entries ranged from descriptions of a difficult debug or verification issue, to a challenge arising from a large, complex design, to a layout or implementation issue. In each case, engineers detailed how they overcame their challenges and how doing so has benefited their lives.

Subject: Download New Custom IC Design White Paper

SAN JOSE, Calif. – SpringSoft, Inc., a global supplier of specialized IC design software, has published a new white paper on schematic-driven layout, an innovative design methodology that assists designers with the physical implementation of complex custom circuits by providing automation and continuity between logic and layout domains.

• Schematic-driven Layout Automation: Speeds the creation of custom layout by automating time-consuming portions of the flow while maintaining user control over the results. An integrated set of graphical windows enable the display and manipulation of the schematics, design hierarchy, and layout. Advanced SDL relies on device generation technology to automatically create the physical layout from schematic elements, providing the next big leap in productivity.

The SDL white paper is complemented by previously published papers on the use of parameterized devices and process design kits:

• Laker Custom Layout Parameterized Devices: A parameterized device is used in the design of analog and custom digital ICs to take the place of many fixed cells by allowing the substitution of different values for specified dimensional variables (parameters). This saves an enormous amount of manual layout time.

• Process Design Kits for Custom IC Design: Process Design Kits (PDKs) enable IC designers to achieve faster time to market and first-pass silicon success for designs that function as intended, offer less risk, and yield more predictable results. PDKs are developed specifically for each manufacturer (pure-play foundry), wafer process flow, and technology node to convey manufacturing requirements (physical and electrical design rules) and device performance.

The unique automation technologies described in these white papers are delivered with the Springsoft LakerTM Custom Layout Automation System.
More than 300 companies worldwide, including 5 of the top 10 semiconductor companies, have adopted the Laker system for designs down to 45 nanometers.

Springsoft Value Choice at July 2009

March 9th, 2010

The Value Choice

Scott Sandler, Vice President, Corporate Marketing and President of Springsoft USA, urges companies to understand their true value proposition because if they don’t they wont be able to deliver the value their customers expect

Companies make money by delivering value to consumers. Sometimes this value comes in the form of a commodity delivered more efficiently. More often in technology companies, it comes in the form of differentiated solutions that are not available from other suppliers. In every case, value is defined solely in the mind of the consumer: does the product make them feel good, or solve a real problem; does it work consistently well? These are the things of which customer satisfaction is made. read more
